A Brief History of Marion, Ohio

Marion's history can be traced back to the War of 1812, where Jacob Foos, a surveyor for General Harrison's Army, found a spring at the tip of a hill. This became known as "Jacob's Well." Not long after Foos' discovery, Marion County was officially recognized in 1824, being named in honor of General Francis Marion.

Marion: Ohio's Industry Leader

As time went on, Marion became a leader in industry, especially following the foundation of the Marion Steam Shovel Company (Marion Power Shovel) in 1884. By 1911, 80% of the nation's steam shovel and heavy duty equipment was made in Marion, Ohio. In fact, the Marion Steam Shovel Company was contracted and successfully built the Panama Canal during the 1960's, to link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
