Westerville Parks and Rec
Westerville—The “City Within a Park”
Not for nothing did Westerville earn this title! Its Parks and Recreation department works hard to maintain almost 600 acres of parkland and 26 miles of paths and bike trails throughout the city and to promote wellness and physical activity for all residents. The department has been recognized nationally for its top-notch programs and facilities, including four National Gold Medals for Excellence in Parks and Rec Administration and 5 years national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies.
So, just what makes Westerville Parks and Rec so amazing?
Award-Winning Facilities, Parks & Paths
From neighborhood parks, greenways, and protected wetlands to large city-wide parks and recreational facilities, Westerville maintains parkland in 46 locations, all within walking distance of many residents. Eleven of these parks include rentable facilities for group meetings, parties, and events. Other park amenities include interactive playgrounds, athletic fields and courts, dog parks, skate parks, picnic areas, walking and biking trails, and even fishing areas and public art spaces.
Additionally, the Westerville B&W (Bike & Walk) Route offers color-coded, mapped, and measured trails throughout the city for easy exercise tracking and route navigation.
The Westerville community Center is a 96,000 square-foot facility offering a gymnasium and fitness center, lap pool with diving boards, water playground, and a second pool complete with a waterslide and lazy river.
Top-Notch Community Events & Programs
Westerville Parks and Rec wants to ensure that residents enjoy a healthy, happy, and active lifestyle, and they offer many programs to promote wellness throughout the community. One such programs is the Live W.E.L.L. program, designed to promote a healthy and active lifestyle through education and community programs designed to increase awareness and physical activity. Some of these active programs include group fitness classes, active adult programs, sports leagues for youth and adults, and kids classes and camps.
Promotion of Arts & Culture
It’s not all about fitness and activity… Westerville Parks and Rec also promotes arts and culture through a variety of education and recreational programs. Classes throughout the city are available for young children, teenagers, and adults, and range from arts and crafts to dance to cooking and continued education. It is also proud to sponsor the Westerville Parks and Recreation Civic Theatre and to promote Public Art in Westerville Spaces throughout the city.
Ongoing Green Efforts Through the Environmental Stewardship
Westerville cares about its residents—and the environment! Through the Environmental Stewardship, Westerville seeks to preserve and care for the natural environment while working to create a sustainable lifestyle. Programs such as Green Pact, enhanced recycling, urban forestry, and preservation seek to preserve the environment, while educational workshops and programming encourage residents to learn and participate in efforts to create a more sustainable culture.
